The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, encouraged corps members to participate in skill acquisition programs available at their camps to help them become self-sufficient after their service period. During his visit to the NYSC Orientation Camp in Maiduguri, Borno State, he advised members to avoid negative behaviors such as drug abuse and unauthorized travel. He reassured them that they would be posted to safe areas for their assignments.
Brigadier General Ahmed praised the corps members for their excellent conduct during the orientation, describing it as “the best so far” and emphasized the NYSC’s commitment to their welfare. He stated, “I assure you that wherever you will be posted for your primary assignment must be safe and secure. Avoid unnecessary traveling and if you must travel, always obtain permission before doing so and don’t forget to move along with your identification card wherever you may go.”
He also highlighted the importance of engaging fully with camp activities, which are designed to equip them for future challenges. “I urge you to pay attention to all camp activities in camp, as they are designed to prepare you for life ahead, especially take your security tips lectures seriously and be law-abiding,” he said. The Director-General stressed the importance of respecting local cultures and traditions and carrying identification at all times.
Brigadier General Ahmed further encouraged the corps members to engage in entrepreneurship activities to supplement their income, noting that “those you know that are working know that salary is not enough.”
In his remarks, he also recognized various groups and individuals with cash awards for their outstanding performances and contributions at the camp. He announced a special celebration for the corps members, promising to provide three large cows and 80 cartons of malt. He also made his phone number available to the corps members to ensure the promised gifts were delivered as stated.
The state coordinator of NYSC in Borno, Alhaji Adamu Jiya, in his welcome address, noted that 1,162 corps members registered for the 2024 Batch A stream II orientation exercise. He commended the corps members for displaying maturity and a high level of discipline and encouraged them to continue in that direction.
