The teams of US President Joe Biden and Donald Trump, his Republican opponent, are at odds over scheduling Transgender Day of Visibility on Easter.
Biden declared Saturday, March 31, as Transgender Day of Visibility, stating it’s a day to “celebrate the bravery and contributions of transgender Americans.”
Biden marked March 31 for this observance again, as he did in 2021, but this year it coincides with Easter Sunday, a significant day for Christians.
Trump’s campaign called Biden’s choice “shocking” and accused him of a “years-long assault on the Christian faith.”
They demanded Biden apologize for the overlap, stating, “Easter should only be about celebrating Jesus Christ’s resurrection,” as per Trump campaign spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt.
Mike Johnson, a Republican House leader, also criticized Biden, calling his decision “shocking and wrong,” and a betrayal of the “central tenet” of Easter.
In response, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates accused Republicans of trying to “divide and weaken our country with cruel, hateful, and dishonest rhetoric.”
Bates affirmed, “As a Christian who observes Easter, President Biden aims to unite people and respect every American’s dignity and rights.”
Additionally, Bates criticized Trump for exploiting his faith for profit, specifically mentioning Trump’s promotion of “God Bless the USA” Bibles for $59.99.
Elizabeth Alexander, speaking for First Lady Jill Biden, dismissed claims about banning religious symbols in a youth art contest as misleading, noting that “past administrations, including Trump’s, used the same standardised nondiscrimination language.”
As the presidential election nears, the debate over transgender rights sharpens the divide between Democrats and Republicans.
Biden positions himself as a supporter of LGBTQ rights, pushing for more fairness and equality. Meanwhile, Trump appeals to conservative Christians who feel sidelined by modern liberal culture.
The recognition and rights of transgender individuals vary widely across states, with Democratic-led states generally allowing individuals to choose their gender without medical procedures. In contrast, Republican-led states have enacted laws restricting gender-affirming care for minors and limiting participation in women’s sports based on biological sex.
