2024 Budget

Peter Obi, the Labour Party‘s presidential candidate in 2023, has advocated for a thorough revision of the 2024 Nigerian budget. On Monday, through a post on his X platform account, he appealed to both the executive and legislative branches of the government to re-examine the budget to safeguard its integrity.

The request comes in the wake of controversies surrounding the 2024 budget, highlighted by allegations from Bauchi Central Senator, Abdul Ningi, who claimed the budget was inflated by over N3 trillion and that the executive branch is implementing a version different from what was approved by the National Assembly. These allegations, which both government branches have denied, led to Ningi’s three-month suspension. Nonetheless, Obi believes these concerns necessitate a full budget review.

In his statement, Obi expressed: “Having followed the controversies trailing the 2024 budget, and having read some of the budgetary provisions and allocations of resources, I wish to respectfully appeal for a total review of the entire budget. The Executive and Legislative arms should initiate an immediate review of the budget as it is still in early days of implementation in order to enable them to do urgent virement of resources to critical areas. The nation’s resources should adequately be appropriated to critical areas like security, fighting poverty and solving the challenges of hunger and food insecurity, power supply, especially considering the difficult times that we are in.”
