Cadets at the Nigerian Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, have expressed deep concerns over consistent hunger caused by irregular meal times and the downsizing of meal portions by the institution’s authorities. Some cadets attribute the issue to a new caterer, known only as CSP Funke, brought in by the current commandant, AIG Abubakar Sadik. According to them, CSP Funke benefits financially at their expense. “The commandant introduced a new caterer responsible for our three meals a day, CSP Funke, who drives a Highlander Jeep. She’s cut down our food portions significantly, making life very tough for us. She’s so confident that even if we report her, nothing will happen,” one cadet revealed.

The cadets described a system where the kitchen committee, formerly including lower-ranked police officers and academic staff, was restructured by the commandant to favor the caterer’s control. This allowed her to oversee and dictate the reduction of meal portions directly. “She oversees the food serving, instructing staff to reduce portions. For the Regular Course 7, out of 1,415 cadets, food is prepared for only about 700-800, and she blatantly informs the others that there’s no more food available,” another cadet added, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The cadets’ grievances extend to instances of skipped meals, with one stating, “I swear to God, last week, many of us didn’t get breakfast. Some resorted to eating garri.”

The students have called on President Bola Tinubu and relevant authorities for intervention, suggesting an investigation into both AIG Sadik and CSP Funke by parties outside the police force. “We’re pleading with the Presidency, the Minister of Police Affairs, the IGP, and all relevant bodies to assist us and consider appointing external investigators for both the Commandant and the caterer,” they requested.

As of this reporting, the Nigerian Police Academy has not responded to these allegations, and attempts to reach them have been unsuccessful.
