The leader of Afenifere, a Yoruba political group, Ayo Adebanjo, supports changing Nigeria’s government back to a parliamentary system. He believes the current presidential system is too costly and leads to corruption.
During a talk on Arise Television, Adebanjo stated that the presidential system gives too much power to the president, making him act like a dictator.
He explained, “Those of us who remember the parliamentary system in Nigeria believe it’s the best option. The presidential system here turns the president into a dictator who can’t be challenged once elected. His decisions are final.
“Nigeria’s constitution makes our president extremely powerful, more than anywhere else. This system is expensive and full of corruption. We need to change back as soon as possible.
“In a parliamentary system, the prime minister is answerable to the parliament and is considered one of the equals. If he does something wrong, parliament can hold him accountable since the ministers are also elected from their areas.
“The benefits of a parliamentary system are significant. We should quickly make this change and adjust our constitution accordingly.”
