Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 election, said he doesn’t desperately want to be Nigeria’s President. He mentioned this while speaking at the Leadership Newspaper‘s event in Abuja, where he was honored as the Politician of the Year 2023.

Peter Obi expressed gratitude for the award and emphasized his willingness to serve the country if given the chance. He clarified, “I’m not eager to be president just for the sake of it. What I really want is to see Nigeria succeed.”

During his speech, Obi highlighted the irony of Ukraine, despite being affected by war, sending grain aid to Nigeria. He believes that states like Niger, with its vast land area, have the potential to not only feed Nigeria but the entire African continent.

“We shouldn’t be poor, and poverty, especially in the North, shouldn’t exist,” Obi remarked, stressing the importance of engaging the youth in productive activities to combat poverty and reduce crime.

With Nigeria’s large land area, particularly in states like Borno and Taraba which are much larger than countries like Belgium that manage to export food, Obi sees no reason for foreign aid like grain from Ukraine. He argues that with effective leadership, Nigeria could significantly reduce poverty and crime by making better use of its resources.
