On Friday, activist Comrade Israel Joe from Delta State was detained by military personnel during a demonstration aimed at voicing concerns over the nation’s escalating economic difficulties. The arrest occurred at the protest’s gathering point, after which he was transferred to the custody of the police. The police are preparing to press terrorism charges against him, attributing to him the organization of the demonstration that sought to highlight the state’s struggle with soaring living costs and economic challenges.
This protest, planned for Friday, February 23, was a response to the adverse effects of President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, manifesting as severe hardship and inflation. It was set to commence at 7:00 am at the Dsc Roundabout in Warri. However, security forces were deployed early to the site, ostensibly to deter participants, with additional security reinforcements observed at key junctions throughout Warri.
Ahead of the protest, the Delta State police had extended an invitation to Comrade Israel Joe, requesting his presence for a discussion at the State Headquarters in Asaba, as indicated in a letter from the Command, signed by CSP Ya’u Musa Kangiwa. The letter stipulated that Joe should be accompanied by at least two other organization executives for the meeting.
Following his engagement with the police, Joe also met with the Deputy Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Delta State, who expressed concerns that the protest could incite further unrest, given the already high levels of public dissatisfaction.
Despite these engagements, Joe was apprehended by soldiers from the Nigerian Army’s 3 Battalion in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area, and subsequently handed over to the police at Ekpan Station, where plans are underway to charge him with terrorism for his role in organizing the protest.
