Emilio Nsue, the top scorer in Equatorial Guinea’s football history, has decided to retire from international play shortly after being indefinitely banned by his national team.
Nsue made headlines for leading Equatorial Guinea to an impressive start at the 2023 AFCON, where under his captaincy, the team secured two victories and a tie, finishing first in Group A. This group included the 2023 AFCON champions, Ivory Coast, and the runners-up, Nigeria.
Nsue’s performance was particularly remarkable during their final group match against Ivory Coast, the 2023 AFCON hosts, where they won 4-0, and Nsue scored three of those goals. His outstanding performance throughout the tournament led him to become the top scorer, netting five goals in four matches.
However, Equatorial Guinea’s dream run came to an end in the round of 16 with a loss to Guinea.
Soon after receiving the golden boot for his achievements, the Equatorial Guinean Football Association announced that Nsue was banned indefinitely due to “misconduct” during the competition.
Nsue retaliated by accusing the Football Association of misappropriating the team’s prize money and lacking professionalism in their treatment of the team.
Following these events, on Tuesday, February 20, the 34-year-old forward, who scored a record 22 goals for Equatorial Guinea, announced his departure from international football.
