On Tuesday, February 13, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hosted the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s national football team, at the Aso Rock Villa, where he bestowed the national honor of Member of the Order of Niger (MON) on the entire 25-man squad and their coaching staff. This accolade came in recognition of their achievement as runners-up in the latest Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Côte d’Ivoire.
In a grand gesture of appreciation, President Tinubu not only awarded the team members and coaches the prestigious MON but also provided them with plots of land and flats in Abuja, following their return to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) after the tournament.
The celebratory event kicked off with a breakfast reception at the Transcorp Hilton for the squad, which includes notable players such as Alex Iwobi, Ahmed Musa, Victor Osimhen, and others, before they were formally honored at Aso Rock by President Tinubu and senior government officials.
Amidst the celebrations, a critical reflection on the team’s performance came from within its ranks. Kenneth Omeruo, a senior member of the Super Eagles, attributed their loss in the AFCON final to the tactical decisions made by their coach, Jose Peseiro. Omeruo criticized the team’s defensive approach and lack of effective offensive strategies as key reasons for their defeat.
Similarly, the comedian Bovi weighed in on the Super Eagles’ performance, particularly critiquing Coach Jose Peseiro’s strategy and the pre-final online celebrations by some team members. Bovi’s comments highlight a broader discussion on the team’s preparation and focus in the run-up to crucial matches.
