The U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has lauded Nigeria’s positive transformation in disease control, specifically in HIV/AIDS prevention and COVID-19 response. He spoke during his visit to the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR).
Blinken, satisfied with NIMR’s progress, hailed it as a powerful example of U.S./Nigeria collaboration in public health, emphasising the transition from aid to empowering self-sufficiency.
He acknowledged Nigeria’s effective use of the PEPFAR platform during COVID-19, demonstrating the nation’s capacity to handle health crises autonomously.
Blinken stressed the importance of knowledge transfer, citing NIMR’s contributions to research, diagnostics and global health security.
NIMR Director General Prof. Babatunde Salako, represented by the Director, Research, Prof. Oliver Ezechi, expressed gratitude to Blinken and his team for supporting the institute.
He also extended gratitude to his colleagues for keying into the DG’s agenda to make the institute proud.
