Trump Survives Second Assassination Attempt on in Two Months

The FBI announced it is investigating an “attempted assassination” of former President Donald Trump after Secret Service agents fired at a man carrying an AK-47 near Trump’s Palm Beach, Florida golf course. A spokesperson from Trump’s campaign confirmed that the former president is safe, and law enforcement sources revealed that a suspect has been taken into custody.

The incident occurred two months after Trump was shot in the ear during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said the gunman got as close as 300 to 500 yards from Trump when agents fired 4 to 6 shots, causing the suspect to drop the weapon and flee. It’s unclear if the man was aiming at Trump. Witnesses provided a license plate number, which authorities used to track and arrest the suspect.

Two backpacks containing a GoPro camera and ceramic tiles were found at the scene along with the AK-47-style rifle. Bradshaw explained that the golf course had limited security because Trump is no longer president, but future visits will likely have increased protection.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham expressed concerns about the Secret Service, advocating for it to be moved from the Department of Homeland Security back to the Treasury Department for more focused security.

A Republican who spoke with Trump after the incident said the former president was near the 5th hole when he heard gunfire but remained in “good spirits.” Nearby Martin County Sheriff Will Snyder said his officers helped stop and detain a man after receiving an alert from the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Department, the FBI, and the Secret Service.

Shortly after, Trump sent a fundraising email assuring supporters he was unharmed but noted that there are people determined to stop him. He later sent another email declaring his resolve had strengthened after the attempt on his life.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the situation and expressed relief that Trump was safe. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned political violence and called for the perpetrator to face the full force of the law.
