Yesterday, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said that Finidi George will lead the Super Eagles in their friendly game against Ghana in Marrakech, Morocco, this Friday. Before this, George helped out the former coach, Jose Peseiro, from Portugal, who was in charge for two years until the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
Finidi George, who is 52 years old and used to play as a winger for teams like Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis, will be the temporary coach. He started his international career with a goal in a game against Burkina Faso in Lagos on July 27, 1991. Now, he will guide a team of 22 players against Ghana and Mali during this month’s international games.
Finidi scored and assisted many goals during his career, including helping Nigeria qualify for its first FIFA World Cup. Now, 21 months after starting to learn from Peseiro, George will be giving directions from the side of the field when the team faces Ghana.
The NFF also mentioned that 12 of the 22 called-up players have already arrived in Marrakech, although injuries have ruled out a few players. The team at the Adam Park Hotel includes goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards. More players were expected to arrive by yesterday, and one more is coming today.
After playing Ghana, the Super Eagles will face Mali on March 26 at the same stadium.
