The former President of Ivory Coast, Laurent Gbagbo, has decided to run for presidency again, despite a 20-year jail sentence that technically disqualifies him, according to his political party’s announcement.
Gbagbo, who made history as the first ex-head of state to face trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, was acquitted in 2019.
His party, the African People’s Party-Ivory Coast (PPA-CI), stated after a central committee meeting that Gbagbo “agrees to be the candidate of the PPA-CI,” as per a statement released late Sunday.
Although he was cleared of crimes against humanity charges in The Hague, Gbagbo had previously received a 20-year prison sentence in Ivory Coast for a bank robbery charge, a year before his acquittal.
After losing the 2010 elections to Alassane Ouattara, Gbagbo refused to concede defeat, leading to violent conflicts that necessitated intervention by French and UN forces.
In 2022, he was pardoned by Ouattara, the current president and his former opponent. However, Gbagbo was not granted amnesty, which means he is ineligible to run for president next year. His party plans to organize an extraordinary congress to officially nominate him as a candidate for the upcoming election, making it their main focus.
They also intend to campaign for Gbagbo’s reinstatement on the electoral rolls, from which he was removed due to a 2018 sentence that stripped him of his civic rights.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party of Ivory Coast (PDCI), a major opposition group, chose Tidjane Thiam as its new leader in December. Yet, neither Thiam nor Alassane Ouattara have announced their plans for the 2025 presidential race.
