This insight comes from contributions by Lagos locals on Numbeo, a website that collects data from citizens and residents about the cost of living in various locations. They report that “eating rice, milk, eggs, and fruits for 31 straight days a month would total a cost of N137,855.”
The analysis further breaks down that “the minimum daily food cost for a person, including staples like rice, bread, milk, beef, apples, potatoes, and various other foods and fruits, is N4,446,” based on a Western diet model.
Price specifics shared on the platform highlight that “eggs are priced at N266 each and apples at N552 each.”
Numbeo points out the stark reality of poverty with their statement: “According to our research, if a person spends less on food than our recommendation, they are living below the poverty line.”
The National Bureau of Statistics underscored the severity of the situation in its February report, stating that “Nigeria’s headline inflation has increased to 21.91 percent from 21.82 percent in January.” It detailed the impact of various food items on the inflation rate, noting contributions such as “Bread and cereal at 21.67%, actual and imputed rent at 7.74%, potatoes, yam, and other tubers at 6.06%, vegetables at 5.44%, and meat at 4.78%.”
