The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged Abdulfattah Ahmed, the last governor of Kwara State, with wrongdoing.
Ahmed was taken to court this Friday at the Federal High Court in Ilorin, the capital of the state.
The EFCC claims that when he was governor, Ahmed wrongly used N1,610,730,500 that was supposed to be for the state’s security and operational costs to pay for private jet services.
This information was shared by the EFCC on Thursday. It was also mentioned that Ahmed is being charged with a fraud involving N10 billion.
He faces 12 different charges in court.
In one specific charge, the EFCC alleges that Ahmed took N400 million from a N1 billion loan the Kwara State Government got from Ecobank Nigeria Limited, which was meant for finishing various projects in the state, and used it improperly.
The EFCC stated, “Ahmed (as the Governor of Kwara State) between 2015 and 2019 in Ilorin used N1,610,730,500 belonging to the Kwara State Government, which was supposed to be for the state government’s security and running costs, to hire private jets for his travels within the country through Travel Messengers Limited. This money, they said, Ahmed should have known was obtained through illegal means, like breaking trust or stealing.”
Before becoming governor, Abdulfattah Ahmed was the state’s finance commissioner under Governor Dr Bukola Saraki.
He then took over from Saraki and was the governor of Kwara from 2011 to 2019.
