Nigerian varsities must embark on solution-driven researches – President Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has tasked Nigerian universities with conducting research that is aimed at solving the numerous socio-economic challenges facing the nation. Speaking at the Federal University at Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) during its eighth convocation ceremony, President Tinubu emphasized the crucial role of universities as hubs for scientific and technological breakthroughs and innovations.

Represented by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, President Tinubu highlighted the importance of forward-thinking research that promotes sustainable growth. He reassured Nigerians of his government’s dedication to providing adequate funding for advanced research and innovation projects, acknowledging the pivotal role of research in national progress.

President Tinubu underscored the necessity for higher education institutions to adapt to the dynamic nature of the 21st century, where technological advancements continuously reshape global and individual knowledge. He called on universities to anticipate potential technological disruptions, address challenges, and lead in innovation.

“Education is the catalyst for development in any country in this century. Particularly, universities should lead the way in pioneering research, teaching, and community service, fulfilling their threefold mission. It’s vital for our universities to spearhead relevant research that contributes to societal betterment and enhances human life quality. Our intellectual community is recognized for undertaking inventive research that targets national advancement,” he stated.

The ceremony also featured the awarding of honorary degrees to Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Senator Solomon Adeola, and the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Navy, Yusuf Gadji.

Furthermore, President Tinubu addressed criticisms of the student loan scheme introduced by his administration, affirming his commitment to enhancing the education sector. He defended the scheme’s feasibility and importance as part of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at making education accessible to all through effective funding and policies.

President Tinubu made it clear that quality education is a costly necessity worldwide, but his government will not support an educational system that does not contribute to national progress. He advocated for constructive feedback from scholars on improving the management of the student loan scheme, rather than dismissing the concept outright.
