Rapper, Killer Mike was arrested shortly after he won three awards at the 66th Grammys. Chris Gardner, a senior staff writer of Hollywood Reporter, said the rapper was “taken away handcuffs” in Crypto.com arena during telecast for the main categories
Rapper Killer Mike was booked on a misdemeanor battery charge after securing three wins at the 2024 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
“On Sunday February 4th just after 4 p.m. a male adult was detained & handcuffed for a physical altercation that occurred at the 700 block of Chick Hearn Court,” the official LAPD X (formerly Twitter) account posted.
“The suspect was placed under arrest and was transported to LAPD Central Division.” The statement later identified “48-year-old Michael Render,” adding that the Grammy winner had been booked under the charges of “Misdemeanor Battery 243(A) PC, and is in the process of being released” following a citizen’s arrest.
According to police records, Render was released from custody on his own recognizance an hour after being detained.
The performer allegedly got into trouble after he knocked down a security officer after he did not move away fast enough in the pouring rain.
According to the California Penal Code, “A battery is punishable by a fine not exceeding two thousand dollars ($2,000), or by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding six months, or by both that fine and imprisonment.” Render is reportedly scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 29.
Footage obtained by TMZ also shows the fallen officer attempting to stop the musician from fleeing the scene.
The guard eventually caught Render, who was then escorted to the Crypto.com Arena’s security room before being transferred to a penal facility. The Post reached out to Render and the LAPD for comment. Hollywood Reporter journalist Chris Gardner initially posted a clip of the rapper in handcuffs before the official Grammy’s broadcast kicked off.
A bystander reportedly shouted “Free Mike” as he walked by.
“An official tells someone on his team that it’s possible he may be released later tonight from the arena. Unclear if he’s being booked here and what he’s charged with. Trying to find out,” Gardner added in a follow-up tweet.
In a third tweet, Gardner wrote that he “spoke to an official who tells me it’s a misdemeanor and has nothing to do with anything that happened today here inside the arena” and that the official expected the Grammy winner to be released once it was sorted.
“It’s a big nothing,” he concluded.
